Sustainability – After The News Crews Are Gone

by Gail Mooney
January 21 2010

As I continue to follow the news coverage on Haiti, both in print and electronically, I am stunned by the tragedy that continues to unfold.  But at the same time, I am amazed by the global effort to help.

But as money and volunteers continue to come to the aid of the Haitian people, I know all too well that Haiti’s troubles began long before the earthquake and will continue long after the majority of the volunteers, along with the news reporters, leave.

As much as I am in awe of the flood of support of those who have come to the aid of the people of Haiti at this time of crisis, I can’t help think about the individuals all around the world that tirelessly work to help people in need, unnoticed by the spotlight of the news crews.

Many of the extraordinary people that I have heard about while researching this project, are helping people help themselves. They are educating people by teaching them skills or are bringing water to communities so that the people are able to grow crops and sustain themselves.

I have learned that change doesn’t always happen quickly.  In fact, many times it just kind of creeps its way in without most of us paying attention.  But I’m starting to take note of the people in the world who are creating change – in a good way – little by little, a day at a time – to make the world a better place.
